Welcome to St. Philip Lutheran Church! We’re a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) located in North Raleigh. As a community we represent people of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who are one through Christ.

Extravagant welcoming, engaging worship, life-long faith formation, caring community, compassionate service, and generous giving are the core values that shape how we live out our mission of rejoicing in God’s grace to invite, worship, nurture, and serve.

Summer Sermon Series begins on June 3, 2018

The Whole Truth is the title of our sermon series which will begin on June 3rd and run for six weeks. Each week we’ll unpack a popular saying which may sound Christian, may sound biblical, but may not actually be Christian or in the Bible. These are sayings that we’ve probably heard or spoken ourselves to comfort someone or to make sense of something that has happened.

Sayings like:

  • God said it. I believe it. That settles it.
  • God won’t give you more than you can handle.
  • God helps those who help themselves.
  • Love the sinner, Hate the sin.
  • Money is the root of all evil.
  • Everything happens for a reason.

It’s important for us to examine these sayings because when said they may hurt people. They may lead some people to draw conclusion about God which may not be helpful, and which may cause some people to pull away from God.

In his book, Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say, Adam Hamilton identifies these as half-truths because they capture some element of truth while missing the point in fundamental ways.  Each week we’ll seek the whole truth as we ponder the nuances of a particular saying in light of the wisdom of Scripture and the Christian tradition.

Know that there is a place for you here and that you are welcome to participate in every aspect of life in this faith community as we worship, grow in your faith and spread God’s love to others.
