Sunday School
Sunday school is offered to children from 2 years old through high school. Sunday school for children and youth runs from September through May. The curriculum we use for our children ages 2 through the 5th grade is SPARK from Group Augsburg Fortress. SPARK offers a fun and developmentally appropriate look at the foundational stories of our faith. There is a take home sheet each week that allows the learning to continue at home with daily devotions.
Children’s Choir (1st – 6th grade)
The Children’s Choir sings a wide variety of songs and offers music at both services once or twice monthly. Practices are on Wednesdays 6:45 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the music room September through May. There is a monthly “birthday party”. Director Stephanie Rodelander usmcmama@aol.com
Holy Communion Instruction
Children are always welcome at the Lord’s Table. If your child has not received Holy Communion instruction, theymay come forward for a blessing. If you are transferring from another church where your child has already received instruction, your child will be able to receive at St. Philip.
Holy Communion classes are held in the 5th grade. This class is strongly encouraged for all 5th graders even if they have already received their first Holy Communion. Learning is a continual process and doesn’t end once a child has received communion.
If you feel your child is ready to receive prior to the 5th grade, we encourage you to speak to the Director of Faith Formation. Resources are available for you to work with your child at home.
Junior Youth Group (K-5th Grades)
Children need to know that church can be a fun and safe place. Throughout the year, St. Philip offers a place where elementary students can come together for fellowship, devotions, and service. Youth in grades K-5th enjoy service projects, lock ins, Safari Days at Camp Agape, camp and so much more.
BYG Camp at Camp Agape
The 3rd-5th grade youth enjoy the opportunity to attend BYG (Building Youth Groups) camp at Camp Agape. These are weekend or summer week long retreats for our youth to experience God in nature, to spend time with other Lutheran youth from NC connecting to the larger church, and also to spend time with our own youth group building relationships that carry forward into middle and high school youth groups.
Camp Agape Day Camp
Counselors from Camp Agape Kure Beach Ministries come for one week every summer for Agape Day Camp. This camp serves rising first grad- ers through rising fifth graders. The day runs from 9-3:00 and is a lot of fun with games, nature time, devotions, music, crafts, and awesome counselors!!
Cub Scouts
Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where boys from 1st through 5th grade can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.
Sponsored by St. Philip Lutheran Church, Cub Scout Pack 375’s mission is to deliver a fun and inclusive program that emphasizes outdoor activities and provides boys the opportunity to build lifelong friendships. We strive to incorporate the purposes, methods and core values of Cub Scouting throughout all elements of our year-round program.
St. Philip also sponsors Boy Scout Troop 342.
